I have a list of blogs on the sidebar, which rotates according to which ones were most recently updated, but I just wanted to take a minute to highlight this brand new blogger, "Healthy, Con Gusto!".
She has a lot of healthy recipes, with a lot of Peruvian flair. A few that I'm excited to try are a dairy free arroz con leche and a healthy-fied version of Lomo Saltado, which is a delicious beef dish.

Instagram... woo!
Ok, so I think we can categorize my entire Twitter experience as a complete failure. Well, not really, because I still like to read other people's tweets, mainly when I'm bored and waiting somewhere and wanting my phone to entertain me. But, I'm just not the tweeting kind.
So, you'll notice that the top of the page the twitter tab is now gone forever (no big loss), and has been replaced by Instagram. Because, I may not be able to keep up with tweeting, but what I CAN do is take a million picture of my dinner and my cat, so instead of fighting it, I'm just going to go with my strengths!

Weeknight Cooking
This is very exciting, I've added a new tag for your sorting pleasure... this time... week-night dinners, which are things that don't take hours to cook and are well-suited to throwing together on a week night. They still involve cooking, but nothing extensively long. Enjoy!

Old Favorites
I have had a couple requests to pick some of my favorite recipes from the archives, so, here goes...
Vegetarian Dishes:
Rosemary Chickpea Couscous Salad: this is probably the dish I have gotten the most good feedback about, from a variety of sources, so it goes first!
Roasted Cauliflower, Bulgar, and Pumpkin Sauce: so good on a cold night. very hearty.
Potato Crusted Quiche: the main revelation here is the potato crust, which can be adapted to a lot of different recipes. You can then throw whatever is in the fridge in the body of the quiche
Balsamic Gorgonzola Wheatberries: This is the recipe that got me addicted to wheatberries
Spinach Sweet Potato Adzuki Bean Soup: This is delicious, and probably responsible for the most hits to my blog (other than an old post about the children of the corn, which is mysteriously popular).
Meaty Dishes:
French Lentil Salad: this is really delicious either as a warm dinner, or the next day as a cold salad.
Balsamic Lentils: Similar in core ingredients to the French Lentil Salad, the flavors are completely different and very delicious.
Korean Fusion Tacos: This has become a complete staple at all summer events around here.
Slow cooked chicken chili: This is an easy meal to toss in the slow cooker.
Asian style shredded beef: another slow cooker meal.
Rosemary Lemon chicken: good, and also a good way to marinate chicken in general.
Dessert:
Beyond Decadent Coconut Cupcakes: O.M.G.
Margarita Cupcakes: need I say more?
Coconut Sorbet: light and delicious.
Peppermint Krispies: a classic.
Most Fun:
pita bread: This may be my absolute most favorite thing I have ever made, ever.

Search Term Hilarity
So, google analytics is awesome, because it lets me see how many of you come visit, what you come for, and how long you stay. The most popular, by far are people looking for things made with adzuki beans and people who want to know about the blonde children of the corn (except that the Children of the Corn aren't blonde. thats the Village of the Damned kids. just FYI).
But, every once in a while something completely mysterious and awesome comes up, like this:

I'm guessing he somehow got here because of this post on monobrow.com. But, what really gets to me is the tone of desperation. I wish I could help, I really do. Unfortunately the best I can do is to advise him to seek the help of a professional, or else, just curl up on the couch with some rice krispie treats...

Worth Making an Exception
I have this weird pet peeve about embedded you tube videos on blogs. I think this is because normally I like to read things rather than watch them because I'm impatient and I read faster than I watch.
BUT, someone sent this to me, and it is absolutely worth an exception. Mainly, because I crack up every time I watch it, and I have watched it a number of times. You should check it out.
I like the whole thing, but I really start cracking up right around "I want beef jerky!". Although, other key moments are "bow chicka bow wooow", and "I'm your Mom" "Nooo.. you're not".
HA. I love it.

Tilt-shifting...
Ok, so enough with the food posts...
Today I tried my hand at this whole tilt-shifting thing, courtesy of this very fun website tiltshiftmaker.com. Generally, the idea is that this is a technique you would normally do using special lenses that results in changes in the area of the picture thats in focus as well as changes in perspective (I think). However, through the magic of the interwebs, you can do this on photos you already have, which is perfect given that I have no idea how to make a real camera do any of these things. The result is that a different part of the photo is in focus, and it can make it look like a minature model, or like a smaller scene. Apparently the best photos for this are pictures of scenes that have lots of depth in them. Having pillaged my photos, here are some of my attempts...
This is the Shinkyo Bridge, in Nikko Japan- I think it really does look like a little model:

This is a lake in Glacier Park (after quite a hike!):
This is the poor fake Mammoth at the La Brea tarpits (which I love, irrationally)

Fancy meeting you here!
So, I use google analytics to be nosey and keep track of how many people click on my blog (answer: 4 ;-), it also tells you what pages are viewed and where people came from (if they clicked in from other blogs, etc). But, the thing that never fails to be entertaining is the search terms people use that result in finding me, because seriously, they are nothing you would ever expect. Here are a sampling from the last month or so that will be like a nice little year end retrospective
#1- the most popular is, no surprise, some variation on 'yellowfish'. Unfortunately, I do not appear to be the yellowfish they want. I know this because the terms are things like "how to cook yellow fish", "biggest recorded yellowfish", "i am a little yellow fish" and "yellowfish campaign" (campaign for what??). Typically these people seem to be looking for actual information about some kind of actual yellow fish. I don't have the heart to tell them that 1. I know very little about fish, 2. there is essentially no fish related content here, and 3. this blog was named for an actual fish I had for a long time, creatively named "yellow fish" because he is yellow, who met his demise right before I started this (he had lived a super long time and I was very bummed).
#2 The next big category this month was the NYT peppermint candy recipe, which people seemed to be specifically looking for. Why they don't look on the actual NYT page, I don't know, but at least the recipe is here! I feel less guilt ridden about this one.
#3 The most hilarious, by far, is also the most consistent. There appear to be a LOT of people trying to learn about the Children of the Corn. The crazy thing is, I posted on that more than a year ago. And yet, people still find it- most of the time they are searching for some variation of "children of the corn blonde".... what could they be wanting to know??
And, some remaining miscellaneous favorites are... "famous monobrows"/ "pictures of monobrows"/ "photos of monobrows, which could only be from this post on monobrow.com (photo from monobrow.com)
"flickr no pants day", which could only be from this post on No Pants Day
"fruit of the loom underwear ads butterflies" which I can only assume resulted from someone as confused as I was about this ad campaign...
"crapi apartments"- which must be someone in my neighborhood
and for some final holiday spirit... "ice carving of snowman" which must have found my little lab-ice snowman captured on my cell phone...

Additional Fanciness
So, a while ago I added my fancy blog list over on the right, thanks to seeing it first over at The Greatest Best Journal in the World (which is indeed great). Then today, I noticed additional fanciness over at bananaheadpancake (who is having a give-away), and had to try my hand at that as well... so, now on the left (scroll down...) is a very exciting bookshelf, which I will now have to remember to update.

Website Wednesday: No Pants Day
This is also late... this weeks feature is (wait for it)... No Pants Day! Now, you may not be aware of this, so I'm considering it a public service announcement. You should most likely start doing power squats immediately in prep for the annual No Pants Day on May 2, 2008. For more info, you can see the comprehensive website at (you guessed it)...

You can actually see documentation of the no-pants celebrations in the no-pants photo gallery... I was going to put up a few, but, after some careful consideration I decided that posting pictures of strangers in their underwear is just not really my bag. So, you'll have to go forth and forage for pics yourself.
I realize you may be thinking things like... so, if I have no pants on, then where do I keep my pocket lint? Or, if I have no pants on, and my shoes don't have to match my belt, do I have to match them to something else or does everything just devolve into complete chaos? Or, if NO ONE has pants on (not just young hot people, but all people), do I even want to go out of the house? The FAQ answers some of these kinds of burning issues, for instance-- "haha, you only said no PANTS, so can I wear a kilt instead?" (the answer is no, you wiley wiley cheater)
If you ARE debating what outfit to wear, they have kindly supplied a quiz. I, apparently, will be wearing a lovely pair of boxers. Keep your eye out!

As a follow up to last weeks feature on Beard Team USA this week we're going to move a few inches north and celebrate... the monobrow!
In case you need clarification, wikipedia can give use some additional information: it seems that the monobrow, or unibrow, which is medically known as a synophrys, refers to a hypertrophy and merging of the eyebrows-- basically, the presence of abundant hair between the eyebrows, so that they seem to converge to form one long eyebrow. If you STILL need clarification (which seems impossible, but I will pander to your whims), here are some famous monobrows...
Behold, Bert and Frida.
Now. I don't want you to think that monobrows are a thing of the past. On the contrary, monobrows are alive and well... in fact, there is a thriving monobrow community, located at none other than http://www.monobrow.com . This group has a mission statement, and a deeply moving call to arms... "You're not alone. Monobrow.com, celebrating the unity of your eyebrows".

There is nothing I love more than inadvertently stumbling upon some random niche full of people completely passionate about something I have never even thought about before.
For instance, I have recently learned that beards have more uses than concealing receding chins, keeping lumberjacks warm in winter, and making life scratchy and miserable for your significant other. Oh no, beards appear to be a deeply prized art form. As a case in point, for this Website Wednesday, I give you.... the Beard Team USA... a group who's primary goal is 'promoting the worldwide appreciation of beards and mustaches'

Website Wednesday: Cat Cam
Woops, so, this one is going up slightly late...
This one has been around for a while, but its still awesome... this guy has affixed a camera to his cat (Mr. Lee), to see what he is up to. Its pretty amazing, the main thing that seems crazy to me is the quantity of cats he sees during the day! Who knew?

I've been tagged!
Ok, I've been tagged by bananaheadpancake... here are 7 random things...
1. I'm a tagging newbie, this is my first time ever! I have no idea what to do! yikes!
2. I love good margaritas, and even am one the holders of our secret family margarita recipe (because who's most likely to have a family margarita recipe? a crazy pack of Norwegians, yep). In addition to margaritas, beverage-wise, I love hefeweizen and coffee.
3. My first moviestar crush was on Steve Guttenberg, followed not long after by Crocodile Dundee, because apparently as a 10 year old I had not only unusual, but widely varied, taste in men.
4. I have an obsession with flip-flops. You can never have too many.
5. Even though I'm usually pretty patient, sometimes I only fill up my car's gas tank part way because I get SO BORED waiting I can't stand it.
6. I love animals. Besides my lovely Charlotte, I really love dogs, and I REALLY love basset hounds. I have been known to cross streets to pet basset hounds.
7. I do yoga, pilates, tae-bo, and a number of hilarious other forms of exercise in the middle of my living room. I live in a studio apartment, so this is at great risk to my tv and pretty much anything else I own, but I can't resist Billy Blanks!

1. I'm a tagging newbie, this is my first time ever! I have no idea what to do! yikes!
2. I love good margaritas, and even am one the holders of our secret family margarita recipe (because who's most likely to have a family margarita recipe? a crazy pack of Norwegians, yep). In addition to margaritas, beverage-wise, I love hefeweizen and coffee.
3. My first moviestar crush was on Steve Guttenberg, followed not long after by Crocodile Dundee, because apparently as a 10 year old I had not only unusual, but widely varied, taste in men.
4. I have an obsession with flip-flops. You can never have too many.
5. Even though I'm usually pretty patient, sometimes I only fill up my car's gas tank part way because I get SO BORED waiting I can't stand it.
6. I love animals. Besides my lovely Charlotte, I really love dogs, and I REALLY love basset hounds. I have been known to cross streets to pet basset hounds.
7. I do yoga, pilates, tae-bo, and a number of hilarious other forms of exercise in the middle of my living room. I live in a studio apartment, so this is at great risk to my tv and pretty much anything else I own, but I can't resist Billy Blanks!
