Charlotte, the Scientist

As a scientist myself, and a hard-core supporter of the wonder that is Charlotte, it came as a great joy when Dr. Charlie-Pants was recognized for her key scientific contributions. While the experiments were completed many years ago, the results (and her fashion sense) continue to have a lingering impact.

The illustrious organization that bestowed this great honor is "Cat Scientists of the 60's", where Charlotte is profiled along with a number of her feline colleagues. A Nobel Prize is just around the corner!

Merry Christmas to All!

Merry Christmas!

There is a lot of excitement going on around here, first and foremost that I'm enjoying a great visit with my family... second, that the family now includes this little guy, who not only is adorable but managed to tolerate (and even like?) his Santa suit. Third, I have a winner for the give-away!

The winner is... *drumroll*... AubreyLaine!

I'll send her an email to get addresses and such sorted out, but in the mean time... congratulations!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday!

love,
Yellowfish

Tilt-shifting...

Ok, so enough with the food posts...

Today I tried my hand at this whole tilt-shifting thing, courtesy of this very fun website tiltshiftmaker.com. Generally, the idea is that this is a technique you would normally do using special lenses that results in changes in the area of the picture thats in focus as well as changes in perspective (I think). However, through the magic of the interwebs, you can do this on photos you already have, which is perfect given that I have no idea how to make a real camera do any of these things. The result is that a different part of the photo is in focus, and it can make it look like a minature model, or like a smaller scene. Apparently the best photos for this are pictures of scenes that have lots of depth in them. Having pillaged my photos, here are some of my attempts...

This is the Shinkyo Bridge, in Nikko Japan- I think it really does look like a little model:

This is in Osaka, I tried to focus on the couple on the bridge:

This is a lake in Glacier Park (after quite a hike!):

This is the poor fake Mammoth at the La Brea tarpits (which I love, irrationally)

LA Type Girlfriend

This is the last remnant of my series of cell phone pictures. You know, a lot of people spend a lot of time and money doing the internet dating thing, or speed dating, or blind-dating... but really, not enough people just go ahead and post signs on telephone poles. It works for finding lost pets, why not for finding a girlfriend? I saw this on a trip to San Diego...

Now the interesting thing is, I am from LA, and I could be considered computer smart. But somehow, I never called. Who knows, this could have been a tragic missed opportunity to find my soulmate... at least he gets points for creativity!
